BOOK REPORT - ME BEFORE YOU
A summary of the plot
Louisa is 26 years old, she lives with her parents, her sister Katrina, the son of Katrina and her
grandpa in a small town in England. Lou works in a local café, but loses her job, because the
owner decides to close the shop. Louisa's family needs money, so Louisa has to find a new job.
After some temporary jobs, she finds a permanent job as a caregiver for Will Traynor. Will is a
35 year old man, he became quadriplegic, after he was hit by a motorbike. The first two weeks
Louisa hates the job, because Will is being mean, he makes her feel stupid and dumb.
After a while they start to be friends, but then Louisa finds out, why she really got this job. Will
wants to let his life end by an organisation called Dignitas, Dignitas is a Swiss-based assisted
suicide organisation. When his mother refused to help him, Will tried to kill himself with an old
nail, he was twenty minutes from death, but the doctors saved him. After this horrible event,
Camilla Traynor (Wil ’s mother) agrees to take him to Dignitas, but only if Wil agrees to live
another six months. Camilla hopes that after these six months, Will decides to stay alive. Louisa
got the job despite her lack of experience, because Camilla thinks that Louisa can show to Will,
how fantastic life can be.
When Louisa finds out why she got the job, she wants to quit. She doesn’t want to work with
family who agrees to help kill their son. Camilla can convince Louisa to stay and together with
her sister, makes Louisa a plan with outings, so Will can see how nice it is to live.
Louisa starts liking Will and they fall in love with each other. Louisa realizes she doesn’t love her
boyfriend Patrick and breaks up with him. Will tells Louisa, she is the only reason he wakes in
the morning. Will tells Louisa about his favourite place in the world, a café in Paris. Will loves
travelling, so Louisa makes a plan to go on a holiday with Will and his medical caregiver,
Nathan. When Will gets near-fatal pneumonia. Louisa cancels the plans for a adventurous trip.
Instead, she takes Will to the island of Mauritius.
The night before returning home, Louisa tells Will that she loves him. Will says he wants to
confide something, but she admits that she already knows about his plans with Dignitas. Will
says their time together has been special, but he cannot bear to live in a wheelchair. He will be
following through with his plans. Louisa is angry and hurt, so she doesn’t talk to Wil for the
remainder of the trip. When they return home, Will's parents are pleasantly surprised by his
good physical condition. Louisa, however, resigns as his caretaker, and they understand that
Will intends to end his life.
Will and his family are in Switzerland at Dignitas, when Wil ’s mother calls Louisa to beg if she
wants to come too. Louisa and Will tell each other that the past six months have been the best
in their lives. He dies shortly after in the clinic. Will have left a letter and a lot of money to
Louisa, so she can go to college and so she can start travelling. The story ends with Louisa at
the favourite place from Will, a café in Paris, reading Will's last words to her in a letter, that tell
her to 'live well'.
